Why are there so many ads between our friends’ posts, photos, and messages?
This is part of Facebook’s terms of service: in order to use the platform “for free,” each user must consent to give up the rights on their personal data in order to have highly detailed, targetable profiles built around them, and that part of their time be spent viewing ads—time of consciousness which is monetized at a very high price by advertisers.
To withdraw that consent, one must also withdraw from the platform.
It’s an all-or-nothing type of choice.
